It's August..the Sunday of summer!
My favourite month! It's here!! Can you believe how quickly summer is flying by? I've been slowing down and trying to savour every moment. Wanted to share how I do this as I've found it's helped ease anxiety, improve sleep, and feel more in-tune with my energy. In order to enjoy every moment of summer, I get quiet and ask myself, "What do I need right now, in this moment?". It sounds simple, right?
I find the typical Vancouverite likes to jam in a 5am wakeup, 10km run, smoothie date, late morning yoga, throw a full day of work in there, an evening picnic on the beach, another 10km run, and then maybe grab some drinks before heading home. If you're someone like this, power to you! I am not though. But with summer here and lots to do, it can be challenging to make decisions. Let's just say I love having productive work days but also love climbing mountains but also love relaxing in the yard.
So, again. I ask myself, "What do I need right now, in this moment?". And let me tell you..that ego can get in the way! But how invaluable is it when you listen to what you need---both physically and mentally. When I feel inundated with options, I think about where my energy is at, how I want to feel, and whether or not the opportunity or activity will conflict with bigger, more important intentions.
This isn't rocket science but repetition is the mother of all learning, right? So, if you feel Summer is passing you by, remember to get quiet and listen to yourself, soak in the little things, practice gratitudel, and most importantly - get present and slow down.
I love how these photos capture summer so perfectly. But what you don't see is my current situation-- sitting in my kitchen eating Earnest Ice Cream and feeling just as content as the above photos. Sometimes you don't need to do big things to honour your energy (and summer!).
Finally, with the garden and market exploding with goodies, I've been eating lots of simple, fresh food lately. Having said that, no recipe this time around but can I suggest a simple hydration tip? Add sliced cucumbers and fresh mint to a big old jug of water. I guarantee you will feel more motivated to drink up.
