FODMAPS is an acronym for Fermentable, Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Mono-saccharides And PolyolS. These are short-chained carbohydrates and sugar molecules that are poorly digested and absorbed in the body, causing very uncomfortable symptoms for some people such as IBS. These are not necessarily unhealthy foods, but for some people, they ferment in the large intestine causing water to be pulled towards the area leading to diarrhea and a very restricted quality of life.
